Why this matters

EV chargers done badly cost the most when something fails

An EV charger draws 7kW continuously for 4 to 8 hours every charge. That is more sustained load than any other domestic appliance. Done properly, the install lasts 15 years with zero issues. Done badly with undersized cable, no surge protection, no Type B RCD or no proper isolator, you can end up with overheating, tripped circuits, voided car warranties and in worst cases consumer unit damage.

We install every charger to the current OZEV specification with the right cable size for the actual run, Type B RCD protection (mandatory under BS 7671), surge protection device (SPD) on the consumer unit, dedicated 32A or 40A breaker and proper bonding. NAPIT competent person sign-off included so you have certified compliance for warranties, insurance and any future EV charger upgrade.

  • Type B RCD protection (mandatory for any EV charger install)
  • Cable sized to actual run, not assumed worst case
  • Surge protection (SPD) added to consumer unit if not already fitted
  • Smart features (load balancing, solar diversion) configured properly
  • NAPIT competent person notification within 30 days

EV charging facts

The numbers behind
home EV charging

Home charging at 7kW costs around 7p per mile on a typical electricity tariff. Public rapid charging often costs 4 to 6 times that. Home install pays back fast.

7kWstd

Standard Home Charger

7kW single-phase is the standard home charger. Adds around 30 miles of range per hour. Full charge overnight on typical EVs from low battery.

22kW3-ph

Three-Phase Charger

22kW chargers need three-phase incoming supply (most homes only have single-phase). Useful for commercial and multi-vehicle households.

~7p/mile

Home Charge Cost

Charging at home on a typical tariff costs around 7p per mile. EV-specific tariffs (Octopus Go, Intelligent) drop this to 2p per mile overnight.

30mins

Standard Install Time

Standard installs (charger by consumer unit, no special routing) typically take 30 minutes. Longer cable runs and structural work add time.

Frequently asked

EV charger questions, answered fast

How much does it cost to install an EV charger at home?
A standard 7kW untethered home charger starts from £695 fully installed including the charger, Type B RCD, up to 10m cable run, smart app pairing and NAPIT certification. A 7kW tethered smart charger with surge protection (SPD) and solar integration support from £995. 22kW three-phase chargers from £1295. Always quoted on the actual property after a survey, fixed price with no surprise extras.
Which EV charger should I choose?
For most homes a 7kW smart charger is the right choice. Untethered (no cable attached) is more flexible for selling later as future EV owners can bring their own cable. Tethered (cable attached) is more convenient for daily use. Top brands we install regularly: Zappi (best for solar PV homes), Hypervolt, Easee, Ohme, Andersen and Pod Point. We help you choose based on your driving and tariff.
Do I need three-phase for a 22kW charger?
Yes. 22kW chargers require three-phase 400V incoming supply. Most UK homes only have single-phase 230V supply where the maximum is 7kW. We can apply to your DNO for a three-phase supply upgrade where wanted but the cost varies enormously (£500 to £20,000+) depending on your location and the local network capacity. For most homes, 7kW is more than enough.
What is a Type B RCD and why does it matter?
EV chargers can introduce DC fault currents that standard Type A and Type AC RCDs cannot detect. The 18th Edition mandates either a Type B RCD on the charger circuit or a charger with built-in DC fault detection (most modern chargers have this). Either way, the install must protect against DC faults. We always specify the right combination for the specific charger model fitted.
Can I get a grant for the charger?
The original OLEV/OZEV home charging grant for individual homeowners ended in March 2022. The Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) is still active for businesses installing chargers at workplaces. The EV chargepoint grant for flats and rented accommodation is also active for landlords and managing agents. We are OZEV approved which means we can install under both schemes. We help with the documentation.
Do you handle the DNO notification?
Yes. Some EV charger installs require notification to your local Distribution Network Operator (DNO). This is required where the total potential demand exceeds 60A (typically only on multi-charger installs or three-phase) or where load management is being relied upon. We handle the notification on your behalf as part of the install quote. No cost to you.
Can I integrate the charger with my solar panels?
Yes. Smart chargers like Zappi, Hypervolt and Easee can divert excess solar PV generation into the car rather than exporting it back to the grid. Effectively free charging on sunny days. Setup and configuration handled as part of the install. Particularly cost-effective for homes with 4kW+ solar PV and an EV.
Do you cover Milton Keynes specifically?
Yes. Milton Keynes is one of our core service areas. For Milton Keynes specific EV charger information including local install timings, MK postcode coverage and same-week appointment availability see our dedicated EV charger installation Milton Keynes page. We also cover Bedford, Northampton, Luton, Aylesbury and the surrounding areas.
