At a glance

Most cheap LED strips fail within 12 to 18 months. Either the LEDs themselves degrade because they are running too hot, the driver burns out because it is undersized or the strip falls off because it was stuck on with adhesive backing alone. We use commercial grade 24V strips, properly sized DC drivers and aluminium heat-dissipating channels on every install. Smart compatible (RGB, RGBW, tunable white) and dimmable where needed. Every install fully tested and certified.

Why this matters

DIY LED strips fail. Properly installed ones last 15+ years

The LED strip itself is rarely the problem. The problem is almost always the install. Cheap strips with weak adhesive that drops off as it heats, undersized power supplies that burn out at full brightness, no aluminium channel meaning the LEDs cook themselves and no proper switching meaning everything is dim and flickery.

We use the same hardware specified for commercial fitouts: 24V high-CRI strips that show colours properly, oversized drivers that run cool and last, aluminium channels that double as heatsinks and proper switching at the wall or via smart control.

  • High CRI (Ra 90+) commercial grade strips for true colour rendering
  • Aluminium channels with diffusers (no LED dot effect)
  • Drivers oversized 20% above max load for cooler running
  • Mains side wired through fused spurs with proper isolators
  • Smart compatible (Hue, Lutron, Shelly) where required

The numbers behind
strips that actually last

The difference between a cheap eBay strip and a proper commercial grade install is roughly 10x in lifespan and a noticeable improvement in actual light quality.

50Khrs

Rated Lifespan

Commercial grade LED strips properly installed last around 50,000 hours, roughly 15 years at 8 hours a day. Cheap strips fail within 5,000 hours.

CRI 90+

Colour Rendering

High CRI strips render colours accurately. Skin tones look natural, food looks appetising. Cheap strips at CRI 70 make everything look washed out.

24VDC

Voltage Drop Spec

24V strips have less voltage drop over distance than 12V. Better brightness consistency over long runs (essential for stairs and full kitchen runs).

20%spare

Driver Headroom

Drivers should run at 80% capacity max. We size every driver 20% above the strip's actual draw so it runs cooler and lasts far longer.

Frequently asked

LED strip questions, answered fast

How much does LED strip lighting cost to install?
A typical under-cabinet kitchen run starts from £245 fully installed including commercial grade strip, aluminium channel, driver and switching. Stair lighting with PIR sensors runs from £395 per flight. Cove ceiling lighting from £485 per room. Smart RGB installs from £425. Prices include all materials, labour, certification and 2 year warranty.
Why do my existing LED strips keep failing?
Almost always one of three things: the driver is undersized so it burns out; the strip has no aluminium channel so the LEDs overheat and degrade; or the strip itself is a low-quality eBay or Amazon kit running at far higher current than the LEDs are rated for. Proper hardware properly installed lasts 50,000 hours.
Can you install LED strips outside?
Yes. We use IP65 rated strips for outdoor locations: deck edge lighting, garden step lighting, gazebo trim, fence top runs, patio cove lighting and soffit lighting. The driver is housed inside a weatherproof enclosure or fitted indoors with the cable run out to the strip. Good for direct rain exposure year round.
What colour temperature should I use?
For kitchens and bathrooms: 4000K cool white for task lighting. For living rooms and bedrooms: 2700K warm white for ambient glow. For dining rooms: 3000K. Tunable white strips let you switch between cool and warm with a dimmer. Smart RGBW strips give you the full range plus colours.
Are LED strips dimmable?
Yes if specified at quote stage. We use TRIAC dimmable drivers with a compatible wall dimmer for traditional installs. For app and voice control we use smart drivers (Hue, Lutron, Shelly). Mixing the wrong dimmer with the wrong driver causes flicker and short LED life so we always specify the matching pair.
How long should a properly installed LED strip last?
Commercial grade strips properly installed in aluminium channel with an oversized driver typically last 50,000 hours. At 8 hours of use per day that works out to around 17 years. Most failures we are called to fix are within 18 months because of cheap hardware or poor install practice.
Can I use Philips Hue or smart control?
Yes. We install Philips Hue strips, Hue Bridge integrations, Lutron RA3 dimming and Shelly relay smart switching. Strips can be controlled via app, voice (Alexa, Google Home, HomeKit) and traditional wall switches at the same time. Scene support, schedules and music sync all available.
Do you do commercial LED installs?
Yes. We work on commercial LED installs across Bedfordshire, Bucks and Northants for offices, retail units, restaurants, gyms, salons and hotels. Architectural lighting design, feature wall installs, signage backlighting and shopfront strip work all available. Quoted on plans or after a survey.
