At a glance

A full rewire replaces every circuit in the property: ring mains, lighting circuits, cooker and shower circuits, the consumer unit and all sockets and switches. We typically recommend a full rewire when the property has aged VIR or aluminium cable from before 1980, when multiple circuits are failing on EICR or when a major refurbishment is happening anyway. Most domestic full rewires take 5 to 10 working days. We also handle a partial rewire where only some circuits need replacing which is often the smarter call. NAPIT registered, Part P approved, full BS 7671 testing and certification.

Why this matters

A full rewire is a major job and most are unnecessary

Full rewires get sold to people who don't need them. We see it daily: a homeowner calls one electrician about a tripping kitchen circuit and gets quoted £8000 for a full rewire. The actual issue is one ring main on aged cable that could be replaced for £900. We will tell you straight whether you actually need a full rewire or whether a targeted partial would solve the problem at a fraction of the cost.

When a full rewire is genuinely the right call (typically pre-1970s wiring, multiple circuit failures, major refurb already happening) we do it properly. New consumer unit with RCBO per circuit and surge protection. Smoke alarm interlinks to BS 5839-6. EV-ready cabling for future charger fits. Cat6 data drops. All to current 18th Edition Amendment 2 standards.

  • Honest survey, we tell you if a partial rewire would solve it
  • New 18th Edition Amendment 2 consumer unit with surge protection (SPD)
  • RCBO per circuit so faults isolate to one room not half the house
  • EV-ready cabling and Cat6 data drops included on Premium and Pro packages

The numbers behind
a proper full rewire

A full rewire is a structured 5 to 10 day job done in clear stages. These are the specs that decide whether yours will be done right.

5-10days

Typical Duration

Most domestic full rewires take 5 to 10 working days. 1-2 bed flats and houses 5 to 6 days. 3 bed family homes 7 to 8 days. 4-5 bed properties 8 to 10 days.

2.5mm+1.5mm

Standard Cable Sizes

2.5mm twin and earth for sockets ring mains. 1.5mm for lighting circuits. 4mm for showers and cooker circuits. 6mm or 10mm for EV chargers depending on length.

RCBOx N

One Per Circuit

Modern boards use one RCBO per circuit. A typical 3 bed has 12 RCBOs covering 12 separate circuits each independently protected against earth fault and overcurrent.

SPD+

Surge Protection

Surge Protection Devices (SPD) required on most modern consumer units under 18th Edition Amendment 2. Protects against lightning and grid surges.

Frequently asked

Full rewire questions, answered fast

How much does a full rewire cost?
A 1-2 bed flat or house full rewire starts from £3995 fully installed. A typical 3 bed family home from £5995. A 4-5 bed larger property from £8995. All packages include the new consumer unit, surge protection, smoke alarm interlinks, all sockets and switches and full BS 7671 testing and certification. Bespoke quotes for unusual properties, listed buildings and multi-storey homes.
Do I really need a full rewire?
Most properties don't. Common scenarios where a full rewire is genuinely the right call: pre-1970s properties still on VIR rubber cable, properties with multiple circuit failures on EICR, major refurbishments where walls are coming down anyway. Properties where the consumer unit and the wiring are both at end of life. For everything else a targeted partial rewire usually saves you thousands. We tell you honestly which one applies.
How long does a full rewire take?
Most domestic full rewires take 5 to 10 working days. 1-2 bed flats and houses typically 5 to 6 days. 3 bed family homes 7 to 8 days. 4-5 bed properties 8 to 10 days. We work through it in two stages: first fix (cabling, days 1 to 3 or 4) and second fix (sockets, switches, fittings, days 4 to 9) followed by full testing and certification on the final day.
Can I stay in the property during the rewire?
Most clients stay in the property but it depends on tolerance for disruption. Power is off in stages by area not the whole house at once. We work in one or two rooms at a time so the rest of the property stays usable. Kitchen and one bathroom are typically restored to working power by end of day 3 or 4 so cooking and washing continue. Some clients prefer to move out for the duration which is also fine.
How much decoration damage does a rewire cause?
Less than people fear, more than zero. We route cables through floor voids, lofts, behind skirting boards and through wall cavities where possible to minimise chasing. Where chasing is needed we cut tidy channels and fill with bonding plaster ready for skim or paint. Most full rewires need only minor decoration touch-up in the affected rooms, not full repainting throughout. Modern fishing and routing techniques have made rewires far less destructive than they used to be.
Is a full rewire notifiable to building control?
Yes. A full rewire is notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations as it adds new circuits and includes work in special locations (kitchens and bathrooms). We are NAPIT registered which means we self-certify under the competent person scheme. The notification is sent to your local council automatically within 30 days. No separate building control fee or wait for inspection.
Do you replace sockets and switches as part of the rewire?
Yes, all sockets and switches replaced as part of the package. Standard white moulded plates included on Essential tier. Brushed chrome or matte black on Premium tier. Designer screwless plates on Pro tier. USB-C integrated sockets included on Premium and Pro packages at the most-used positions. All MK, BG, Schneider or Knightsbridge quality fittings.
Is the rewire warrantied?
Yes. 1 year workmanship warranty on the Essential package, 2 years on Premium and 3 years on Pro. The fittings themselves carry the manufacturer warranty (typically 2 to 5 years on consumer units, 25,000+ hours on LED fittings). NAPIT registered which means our certification is also backed by the NAPIT competent person scheme insurance.
