LED Lights:
How They Work,
Cost and Safety

Plain English homeowner reference for everything LED. Whether you are upgrading old bulbs, fitting strip lights for the first time or wondering whether flickering is dangerous, this hub answers it. Written by NAPIT registered electricians.

At a glance

This hub covers everything UK households need to know about LED lighting. The basics of how an LED actually produces light, the genuine answers to the safety questions (yes including spiders), the running cost vs old halogens and the practical side of cutting and connecting strip lights at home. Fourteen plain English guides organised into four topic clusters. Use the navigation below to jump to your question.

Why LEDs dominate UK homes

The numbers that
made LEDs the standard

These figures explain why every UK home is moving to LED. Lower running cost, longer life and a tiny fraction of the energy use of the old halogen and incandescent bulbs.

90% less

Energy vs Incandescent

A modern LED bulb uses around 90 percent less electricity than an old incandescent for the same brightness. The single biggest lighting saving any UK household can make.

25khrs

Typical LED Lifespan

A quality LED bulb lasts 25,000 to 50,000 hours of use. Compare this to incandescent at 1,000 hours and halogen at 2,000 hours. Most LEDs outlast the fitting they sit in.

1p

Cost Per Hour LED

A typical 9W LED bulb running for one hour costs around 0.2p of electricity. Even left on all evening, the cost barely registers compared to old halogen alternatives.

Frequently asked

Common LED questions answered fast

Are LED bulbs worth the higher upfront cost?
Yes. A quality LED bulb costs £3 to £8 vs around £1 for an old halogen. The LED lasts 25 to 50 times longer and uses around 90 percent less electricity. A typical UK home replacing 30 halogen bulbs with LEDs saves around £80 to £120 per year on the electricity bill and avoids constant bulb replacements. Payback is usually under 12 months.
Why does my LED bulb flicker on a dimmer?
Most LED flicker on dimmers comes from one of two causes. Either the bulb is non-dimmable (check the packaging or the bulb itself for a dimmable label) or the dimmer is an old leading edge type designed for incandescent bulbs. Modern dimmable LEDs need a trailing edge dimmer (LED compatible). Replace either the bulb or the dimmer to fix it.
Can I install LED downlights myself?
Replacing a like-for-like LED bulb in an existing fitting is a DIY job. Installing new downlights from scratch (cutting holes in ceilings, adding new circuits or connecting to lighting circuits) is notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations and must be done by a registered electrician. The certificate is needed for property records and any future EICR.
Why do my LEDs look colder than the old halogens?
Colour temperature. Old halogens had a warm 2700K to 3000K colour. Many cheap LEDs are sold at 4000K (cool white) or 6500K (daylight) which feel clinical in a domestic setting. For a warm halogen-like glow, choose 2700K to 3000K LEDs. Check the box for the Kelvin rating before buying.
Do LED strip lights need a transformer?
Yes. LED strip lights run on low voltage DC (usually 12V or 24V) so they need a driver or transformer to convert mains AC. Buy a driver rated for the total wattage of the strip with 20 percent headroom. Underspecced drivers run hot, fail early and can dim the end of long strip runs.
Are smart LED bulbs worth it?
Smart LEDs (Philips Hue, LIFX, IKEA Tradfri etc) cost more upfront and need a hub or wifi connection. The benefit is voice control, scheduling, dimming from your phone and full RGB colour. Worth it for living areas, kids' rooms and feature lighting. Less compelling for utility spaces like cupboards or garages where standard LED bulbs are cheaper and just as long lasting.
