Frequently asked

Common EV questions answered fast

Do I need a home charger or can I just use a 3-pin plug?
You can technically charge a UK EV from a 3-pin plug using a granny cable but this is meant for emergencies only. The 3-pin charges at around 2.3kW, around three times slower than a 7kW dedicated charger and the load on a domestic socket for 12+ hours every day will eventually cause overheating. A proper 7kW home charger is the right setup for any UK driver charging at home regularly.
How much does it cost to install a home EV charger in the UK?
Typical UK home EV charger installs cost £900 to £1500 supplied and fitted in 2026. Hardware costs £400 to £900, install labour adds £400 to £600. Complex installs with long cable runs, consumer unit upgrades or three-phase requirements can push costs to £2000+. The OZEV grant offers up to £350 off for eligible properties (flats, rentals, certain low-income households).
Should I get a tethered or untethered EV charger?
Tethered chargers have a built-in cable and are convenient for daily home use - just plug straight into your EV. Untethered chargers have just a socket so you carry the cable with you. Untethered is more flexible if you change EVs (different connector types) but tethered wins for everyday convenience. For most UK homeowners with one EV, tethered is the right choice.
How long does an EV battery last?
Most modern EV batteries are warranted for 8 years or 100,000 miles to 70 percent capacity. Real-world data shows batteries typically last 12 to 15 years before significant degradation. The 2010 Nissan Leaf was the first mass-market EV - many original batteries from 2010 to 2012 are still going. Treat the battery well (avoid 100 percent charges except before long trips, avoid deep discharges) and it will outlast the rest of the car.
Are EVs more expensive than petrol cars to insure?
Yes typically 15 to 30 percent more expensive currently. Insurers cite the higher repair costs (battery damage in minor crashes is expensive) and the lack of long-term claims data for the EV market. Premiums are starting to come down as more data accumulates and parts supply chains mature. Shop around with EV-specific insurers like LV, Direct Line or specialist brokers.
Will my home wiring need upgrading for an EV charger?
Possibly. A 7kW EV charger is a 32A continuous load circuit which most older consumer units cannot accommodate without modification. Common upgrades include adding a dedicated MCB or RCBO, installing a Type B RCD for ground fault protection or in some cases a full consumer unit replacement. We assess this on the free site survey before quoting. Around 60 percent of UK homes need some consumer unit work alongside an EV charger install.
